Supporting the Needs of Women and Girls Affected by Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and the Impacts of Conflict
Democracy House Organization, in cooperation with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has implemented a program aimed at supporting the needs of women and girls who have been affected by sexual and gender-based violence resulting from conflicts.
The project focuses on equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect affected women and girls, ensure their effective participation, and strengthen the implementation of the Iraqi National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security. It also works to increase access to support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
Mr. Salem Dawood, Executive Director of the organization, emphasized that sexual violence is one of the most critical issues, yet it is often not openly discussed in society, despite its profound effects on survivors. He stressed the importance of understanding the types of sexual violence, its consequences, the symptoms that may follow, and the actions that should be taken when it occurs.
He added:
"We must shift the stigma from the victim to the perpetrator, and provide all forms of support to women and girls affected by sexual and gender-based violence, enabling them to reclaim their dignity and rights.
